Figure I’ll go ahead and give a sneaky peek of the terrible progress I’ve made on my Arthur project which I’m calling “Operation Delta Major 9” because that sounds fairly cool.
Arthur’s of course in the left top corner. I decided to change his glasses to square frames in hopes of making him look less kiddish and goofy. He’ll more than likely cycle in and out of having some facial hair/stubble like yours truly. Don’t be surprised if he pretty much becomes me.
Below him is Buster. I decided that I wanted to make Buster fit with really short-cut blond hair. I’m still not totally sure what I’m going to do with his character. Honestly he could end up being kinda static, especially starting out. I’m trying to still make him eccentric, but much more socially aware of it, sorta how I try to be. I’m not sure I’m capable of writing him as a goofy character while still being able to see him as a serious character.
Top right is Francine. I’ve been increasingly hesitant to draw the girls and Francine sorta shows some reasons. 1: I’ve never been particularly good at drawing girls of any kind. Try to add some animal-y features to that and it’s even worse. 2: Boobies. I think I should be mature enough to be able to draw breasts, but the problem is somewhat related to the first: I’ve had virtually no practice. Now this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and you’d think that with all the comics I read, I’d have a good idea. The problem there is that those are comic boobs which I try actively to avoid. I’m not gonna slap a pair of Power Girls on Francine Frensky. 3: there’s the issue of actually sitting down and drawing and practicing. Kyle already brought up the point that if he didn’t know I was doing this, he’d think I was just getting into furries, which instantly deterred me. I can’t just have a bunch of sketches of cartoon girl monkeys/dogs/cats lying around, especially when I’ve had to practice drawing their busts to gain consistency between characters.
Last but not least is Binky down there in the bottom right corner. I haven’t given a whole lot of thought to his character yet, but I know I wanted minimal buzz-cut hair and a square jaw. I’m going with the classic route of the fat kid remaining large, but now fit. His design was the one I was most surprised by- I drew it the first time and was pretty much satisfied.
I’ve got some others in the works, like George who I’m pretty much done designing (is that the right word for this sort of thing?). The Surprisingly-Difficult-to-Design Award goes to The Brain. I have no idea what I’m gonna do with that guy without making him look too much like Arthur or straight up goofy. All the other girls have yet to be attempted, with the exception of an outline of Fern’s head because, look at that thing, that girl’s got a weirdly shaped noggin.
Ok. Good talk.

The hardest part of doing this Arthur thing will be addressing all the characters since there are approximately 12390139831256789613874897 of them.

Mackenzie and I spent a solid 20 minutes talking about the characters from Arthur and where they’d end up in high school/college/”the real world.” This has inspired me to tell these tales in the form of a (web?)comic. So that’ll keep me busy/happy for a while. Hopefully.

And since I posted about the possibility of that happening, it probably won’t…
